Howdy! Gray County is one of 254 counties in Texas. Located on the eastern side of the Texas Panhandle, Gray County was established in 1902 and named after Peter W. Gray, who was a member of the First State Legislature. The county seat is Pampa, which is the hub of the eastern panhandle. Other communities in the county include Alanreed, Lefors, and McLean. Gray County is known both for industry and agriculture. It has a population of approximately 23,850 people and a Civilian Labor Force of 10,815.
Pampa is served by U.S. Highway 60 and Texas Highways 70 and 152. Interstate 40 is runs through McLean and Alanreed. The Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad provides piggyback and switching service. Private air service is available at the Perry Lefors Airfield. Major employers in Gray County include: the Independent School Districts, Pampa Regional Medical Center, Celanese Chemicals Division, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, IRI International, Mundy Co., Cabot/All Divisions, City of Pampa, Hudson Drilling Co., Wal-Mart, Gray County, and Titan Specialities. Recreational facilities in Gray County consist of: city parks, Hidden Hills Public Golf Course, Public Library, Pampa Country Club, Pampa Youth & Community Center, M.K. Brown Memorial Auditorium, WhiteDeer Land Museum, Freedom Museum USA, Optimist Club, Recreation Park, Community Swimming Pools, and City Lake. The county also includes more than 59 churches, 8 motels, and 15 Civic Clubs. Gray County Health Services includes one hospital with 107 beds, ten clinics, two rest homes with 196 beds and one assisted living center with 36 rooms. Currently twenty-five doctors and thirteen dentists service the area. The doctors specialities consist of family practice, internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, pathology, radiology, urology, psychiatry, and hospice director. The county is also serviced by trained emergency medical services. Educationally, Gray County has seven elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools, one alternative high school, four private schools, and one Junior College. |
